When do I know that I am officially accepted into James Madison? James Madison will notify parents of their enrollment into the school through a number of methods. Initially, staff of the school will contact parents via phone to confirm their application and desire of enrollment. James Madison will send parents an enrollment packet, which should be completed by the family. Once school officials receive this packet and upon final review and acceptance, your child will be enrolled in the school. Your school materials will then be ordered and mailed to your home. A schoolteacher will make contact with you, either by phone or e-mail. Your teacher will then be your initial point of contact. If I have applied for a scholarship through FloridaChild, how do I let the school know that I am approved? Once FloridaChild approves your scholarship, they will send to you a School Commitment Form. You must complete this form to advise them that you are interested in enrolling in the James Madison K12 Academy. Once FloridaChild receives this form from you, they will then forward your child's tuition to the school. When will I receive my materials? You will receive your school materials and on-line access within 1-2 weeks of official enrollment to the school. These materials will be shipped to your home. You will also receive information from the school regarding your on-line access information. If my child has special needs, will James Madison proceed in managing his/her needs? James Madison will review your child's Individual Education Program (IEP), if her or she has one, to determine your child's special needs and determine which special services will be required. The school will develop an agreement with a professional service provider in your home area to assess and deliver those needs. When can I anticipate hearing from my teacher? You will receive information from your teacher after the school has received your completed enrollment packet. If my materials arrive after the school's start date, how do I proceed with my child's education? The school is flexible about your start date. We would like all students to be actively engaged in school-related studies by the end of September. Your teacher will work with you regarding specific ideas and activities, which you can access from your on-line curriculum prior to receiving the traditional materials. Once the school receives my FloridaChild scholarship money, how do we handle the endorsement of the checks to the school? The school will host informational sessions throughout the state of Florida so that you can meet with school officials and finalize scholarship requirements. Do I need to return my school materials after the school year? Non-consumable materials must be returned to the school at the end of the year. The school will provide complete details to your family in the spring. Does the school charge for attendance during the field trips? There will be several optional field trips throughout the year. Some of these may have a minimal cost associated with them. As a parent you will be responsible for this cost. The school may also provide field trips, which require no cost. The school will advise parents of the cost when they publish optional school field trip schedules in your area. What type of testing is administered for students? James Madison K12 Academy will conduct standardized tests in the spring of each year. This will be proctored by a school official and will be held at various sites throughout Florida. Is there a possibility this test can be proctored at my home? Because these tests are standardized, it will be necessary for the tests to be proctored in a neutral setting (for example, a conference room or similar setting in a school or community center). Will my child receive a diploma? We anticipate that James Madison will offer a high school diploma to students who complete their coursework according to the school's standards of performance. Since this is a new private school, does the school anticipate receiving accreditation? When will this occur? School officials are working closely with Florida Department of Education officials on this important matter. We will provide updates as information becomes available, but accreditation is typically a multi-year process. If my children excel through a grade early, can they move to the next grade? If so, do I have to pay full tuition again? Since James Madison and the K12 curriculum are individualized and self-paced, it is possible for your child to proceed through a grade level early. This decision will be made jointly by the parent and teacher. If my child struggles with a particular class or subject and should not be promoted to the next grade level, how does the school handle this? As mentioned previously, the parent and teacher jointly determine the progress made for your particular child. Since the curriculum is self-paced and individualized, children don't have to return to the beginning of the school year; they can pick up right where they left off. Does the school issue grades? Yes, the school will issue grades. In grades K-2, students will receive an informal report card that is based on mastery of skills. In grades 3-5, students will receive letter grades with teacher comments. Is school year-round? James Madison, a virtual private school, will follow the Florida school calendar. Are there any age restrictions with enrollment to the school? Students must be 5 years of age by September 1. However, a request can be made to school officials should you wish to enroll your child at an earlier age. The Academy does ask that parents seek the guidance of their school teacher regarding the appropriate grade level in which to enroll your child. Why should I choose this school instead of purchasing K12 as a curriculum? James Madison Academy will offer a school environment that will include excellent teachers and administrators, special education services, field trips, socialization experiences, a school community, grades, standardized tests, diplomas, and extracurricular activities commonly found in private schools. Is there a tuition break for multiple children? At this time, there is no tuition break for enrolling more than one child in James Madison Academy. What is the payment plan if I am not eligible for scholarships? The payment plan requires a $500 deposit, then payments of $300/month for 10 months. What contact do I have with my local school district after I enroll in the James Madison K12 Academy? School officials will determine what type of contact will be necessary with local school district officials. Does the school handle all my legal education requirements for the state of Florida? Yes, school officials will handle applicable legal education requirements for the State of Florida. How active will the teacher be with my family? James Madison teachers will determine how often contact should be made with you and your child. The teachers will contact you by phone for conferences to lend support and discuss any of your concerns. During these conferences, teachers will also confirm your child's attendance and inform you of any information from administration. The teacher will not visit your home uninvited. |
